Activities
Lectures
The YAS organises a busy schedule of lectures both as a
Society and through the special interest Groups. These are
held mainly at 'Claremont', from early September through
until June. A number of lectures also take place elsewhere
in the county.
Events
There are occasional excursions to sites both inside and
outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The Society is also
involved in a number of other activities such as the
Heritage Weekend, in September, and various book fairs and
larger scale events around the county. Social events are
organised on an occasional basis.
Publications
There are a number of regular publications. The
Yorkshire Archaeological Journal is an annual publication,
usually issued in August, which contains a variety of
articles and reports, reflecting the work going on in the
area and the interests of members of the Society. There is
now an index on CD covering Vols 1 - 77 available for
purchase. See Publications lists.
The Parish Register Section has been working on the
transcribing, indexing and publishing of parish registers
from all over Yorkshire and these are published on a
regular basis. See Publications lists.
The Record Series includes a number of very important
works, including 'Early Yorkshire Charters', records of
some of the Yorkshire abbeys, Quarter Session records, tax
records and other important records. Again, these are
published regularly. See Publications lists.
The Wakefield Court Rolls Series. Wakefield was one of the
largest manors in Yorkshire and the Court Rolls provide a
great deal of information about the people of Yorkshire,
how they lived and the customs and regulations that ruled
their lives. Work on these records includes conservation of
the original manuscript rolls as well as the on-going
transcription of the texts. These are also published on a
regular basis. See Publications lists.
Another publication series is the Yorkshire Archaeological
Report, a larger report than those included in the Journal.
The series is currently standing at four volumes, but more
are planned for publication within the near future. Recent
volumes include the Seven Barrows volume, Beadlam Roman
Villa, Excavations at the vicus at Malton and Rural
Settlement and Industry. See Publications lists.
In addition, a number of sections produce annual volumes of
work in their own particular field. The Society also
produces a newsletter Update three times a year containing
news and information and other items of interest to
members. There is a librarian and/or an archivist on duty to
help visitors every day. There is no need to book when
using the library, but researchers must contact the
archivist prior to arrival if they wish to use the archive
facilities. The archives are not normally open on
Saturdays. Those wishing to use Microfiche readers should
also book in advance to ensure the availability of a
reader.
The Library is staffed mainly by volunteers from the
several Sections of the YAS and it would be appreciated if
anyone wishing to make contact with specific Sections
should do so by leaving a message with The Librarian or his
assistants.
