Becoming a member of the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society allows you the opportunity to explore the history and pre-history of the historic county of Yorkshire. Whether you are an academic, professional archaeologist, student, amateur historian, or just have an interest in the history of the place where you live the YAHS can help you access Yorkshire's past through lectures, meetings, events, excursions, publications and historic collections.
We provide a range of membership categories to suit all people from full individual membership to associate and student membership. Through our shop you can purchase membership of the main society and also membership of our special interest sections. Discounted section membership is available to all members of the main society.
All members receive regular mailings by email or post, which include copies of our newsletters, Annual Report, and Programme of Events, along with details of other Yorkshire-related events and publications. Individual members of the YAS are entitled to a copy of the Society's annual publication the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal - which contains articles of a wide range of archaeological and historical topics.
Other benefits to members include discounted membership of YAHS Special Interest Sections, special offers on YAS publications and library borrowing rights (see individual membership categories for borrowing restrictions).
In order to comply with HMRC rules on Gift Aid borrowing rights are no longer included in membership subscriptions. All members may borrow up to 6 books at a time for a period of 3 months on payment of an annual fee of £1 to the librarian.
The YAHS encourages its members to get involved with the running of the Society and help to meet its aim of promoting the study of Yorkshire's past. All members are welcome to attend the Annual General Meeting, serve as an officer, stand for election to its Management Board, or just offer feedback and ideas.
Membership of the Society not only provides a great range of benefits, but also helps support the Society and allows us to provide access to our collections and reach out to everyone with an interest in Yorkshire's past.
Membership runs from 1st January to 31st December each year. Subscriptions are payable annually on 1st January each year. Anyone joining after 1 October will be allocated membership for the following year unless specified by the applicant.
Traditionally the Management Board of the Society requests sponsorship of applications for membership, however, we accept that applicants may not know an existing Member of the Society and we would not wish this to stand in the way of anyone becoming a Member. If you purchase membership through the shop, on receipt of your application the membership secretary will ask you to provide some information about yourself and your interests in the history and/or archaeology of the county.
Applications must be made by the person purchasing membership, therefore, it is not presently possible to buy membership as a gift for someone other than yourself through the shop.
