Joint meeting with the Newcomen Society at Armley Mills Industrial Museum.

Morning seminar with lecture by Dr Michael Bailey on Leeds Locomotive Builders, followed by curator John McGoldrick on The Locomotives in the Museum Collection and The Refurbishment of the Galleries.          

Seminar on Leeds Locomotives and visit to the Locomotive Galleries at the Armley Mills Museum, from 11.00 am, Saturday 24th January 2026 The Locomotive Galleries at Armley Mills Museum have been closed since catastrophic flooding in December 2015. A major flood prevention scheme, which included a flood wall around the Museum site and the rebuilding of the gallery wall adjacent to the River Aire, has now been completed, and the galleries will reopen to the public in 2026. This meeting is an opportunity to view the newly completed gallery and to hear about the major locomotive industry in Leeds and the important railway collection held by the Museum.

Booking is essential. Tickets cost £16 which includes Museum entry, attendance at the Seminar, a Buffet Lunch, and the tour of the Railway Galleries. If you cannot attend in person, the lectures given at the Seminar can be accessed online for free.

11:30 am Michael Bailey -  The Leeds Locomotive Building Industry in the 19th Century
12:30 pm John McGoldrick - The Leeds Railway Collection
1:30 pm - Buffet Lunch
2:15 pm - Group 1: Accompanied tour of the new locomotive gallery Group 2: Opportunity to explore the museum galleries
3:15 pm - Groups swap over
4:15 pm to museum close at 5:00 pm, continuing opportunity to explore the museum collection
