Marriage by clog and shoe

Prompted by weddings being in the news, Alex Medcalf of the Yorkshire Historic Dictionary project has been looking at models of marriage in centuries past. Some  were rather informal, and presumably didn't have any official status. But what is marriage 'by clog and shoe'? Is it what used to be called 'over the brush'? Alex would like to know!
