Lecture 2

A Later Prehistoric Ringfort and Sanctuary near Middleton on the Wolds
Dr Peter Halkon
The ringfort near Middleton on the Wolds and its adjacent enclosure had been plotted during the RCHM(E) aerial survey of the Wolds but its true significance was not appreciated until a geophysical survey in 2017 when a large central roundhouse and other features were found that closely resembled the later Bronze Age ringfort at Paddock Hill, Thwing. Dr Halkon will reveal the extent of the findings of the excavations funded by the YAHS and the East Riding Archaeological Society from 2018 to 2021, including a further smaller round house, complex entrances to the ringfort and the adjacent Sanctuary.
Dr Peter Halkon, FSA is an Emeritus Fellow University of Hull, an Honorary Research Associate of the Department of Archaeology, University of York and Chair of the East Riding Archaeological Society. His main research interest is in the landscape archaeology of later prehistoric and Roman eastern Yorkshire.
