A visit has been arranged to the already-successful excavation by Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group at The Hagg, High Fremington (SE 05694 98989). The date is Saturday, July 14th.
Last year the group uncovered a Roman farmstead with a large courtyard with entrances from the east and a further entrance to the south leading to a southern annexe. Further work into the roundhouse also found evidence of a porched structure with a pathway leading up northeast to the as-yet unexcavated upper platform. Further pottery remains, as well as quernstone fragments, an unworn silver denarius of Caracalla struck in Rome in AD201 and a crossbow brooch of a rare type also added to the evidence uncovered.
